James Casebere, Sing Sing 2, between 2003 and 2005. Dye destruction print, 28 1/2 in x 38 1/2 in. The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, Gift from the Heather and Tony Podesta Collection, Washington, DC, 2012
As part of FotoWeekDC, the Phillips presents photographs from the permanent collection. Some works are devoid of figures, yet have a human presence, such as select pages of Andy Warhol’s polaroid album from the 1970s, James Casebere’s dramatically lit environments, and Frank Thiel’s emotionally charged urban structures. Nikki S. Lee’s subversive urban scenes and Philip Trager’s portrait photography further highlight the tension between real and surreal, the snapshot and the staged photo.
