Photographer Susana Raab first began visiting the neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River (EoR) after living in the city for over a decade. In The Invisible Wall, she uses large and medium format film cameras while approaching strangers for portraits and photographing landscapes of historical or cultural significance in the development of EoR.
Separated from the rest of the city by the Anacostia River, this virtual moat has both protected and isolated the neighborhoods East of the Anacostia which represent a rich but threatened history. Not too long ago, the name Anacostia was code referencing a perceived east of the Anacostia River blighted totality Today, as development saturates most areas of the city, Anacostia has come to mean the final frontier for gentrification and development. Raab will take us on a tour of her work and process.
